charlotte and i spent monday of this week putting large letter U’s around johnson fold housing estate in bolton. it’s a commission by bolton at home to tie in with the official opening of a new UCAN centre on the estate. UCAN centres are situated in areas defined as having specific needs to act as a catalyst for changes the residents feel are needed – as a community or in their own lives.
we took themes from a week of activities at the centre to create 5 colour-coded trails that run across the estate fixed to railings, street signs, trees and lamposts, each finishing at the centre. our ideas were refined during a wander around johnson fold with some of the centre staff and we roped in regular collaborator lizi patch to help out with writing a limerick and some dialogue for two of the trails.
you can follow the U’s to cook up a tasty healthy curry recipe, eavesdrop on a conversation, read a limerick, follow cryptic clues around the streets or work out how many calories you’ve burned on your journey. the trails are all 5 or 6 letters long resulting in about 40 letter U’s to be discovered.
