angels to help the church get edgy

we’re glad to have been invited to package, publicise and design the front end of a new dvd for the church of england and methodist church’s fresh expressions initiative. ‘on the edge’ will introduce and explore ordained pioneer ministry – a radical ‘real world’ approach to building church in contemporary culture. we’re told that they came to us because they felt we could bring a contemporary and authentic feel to the design – something a bit different from what you’d expect the church to produce. the dvd will be launched at the ‘momentum’ event in bath on 21st august and also be available at greenbelt festival over the weekend of 25th august.

the green, green grass of home. on a road.

as part of the enterprising britain presentation i told the story of us moving here to scarborough at a time when the town’s reputation was pretty much at an all time low. ‘why scarborough?’ is a question i get asked almost once a week anyway. to be honest we thought scarborough still had a lot of charm five years ago, albeit of the faded victorian glory variety. but we had got an inkling of a cultural renaissance happening.

st nicholas street installation, scarborough.

and that was because i’d previously worked with site specific artist trudi entwistle who in 2002 was commissioned to ‘green’ the street that runs right through the centre of town past the royal hotel and town hall. this was the first renaissance happening after the initial community planning weekend and here in scarborough it’s cited as being the point when people started to think afresh about what was possible in the town.

back in leeds where i was doing some consultancy work at leeds met university and catching up with trudi who was teaching, i got the impression that something must be happening in scarborough. i think that helped cement the idea of moving for us. it created a buzz about the town amongst the people i knew in west yorks. it’s fascinating what an impact a piece of art can have, even something as temporary as this [it was in situ for one weekend] in changing people’s perceptions.

checkout trudi’s website here. and please do – there’s some amazing work.

12 months of renaissance news [and 2 weeks of tom]

12 months of renaissance news

it was only when sorting out past issues of scarborough’s future for the enterprising britain judging that we realised that 12 months had passed since we suggested to nick, the renaissance manager, that we thought a high quality publication could be produced for the same cost as the then, photocopied newsletter. in fact we managed to bring the cost per issue down.

the first new look scarborough’s future was launched in july 2007 to acclaim and since then demand for copies has continued to rise each month and has recently attracted sponsorship from transpennine express. we had two priorities in mind when designing the format: 1. to communicate the dynamism and excitement of the renaissance process in a friendly way; and 2. to design a layout that would stand the test of time and a variety of subjects.

putting that design to the test this month with the electric angel team is yorkshire coast college graduate tom bastiman who has joined us for work experience.

would you like to work with us?

we’re looking for other local graphic designers to work with.

the intention is to identify a small collective of designers who would be the immediate choice to work with the electric angel team on one-off design-for-print projects. this might be a useful arrangement for freelancers or those just starting out with their own business.

if you’re interested, then email with:
- your contact details
- examples of your work [jpeg or pdf format] or a link to an online portfolio
- your hourly rate or some examples of the charging system you use

we’ll get back in touch with you with further details of how we anticipate the collective might function and how the selection procedure will take place. feel free to ring adrian for a chat if you have any questions.

with last night’s south bank show retrospective of billy joel it’s maybe time for us to confess our appreciation of the piano man. songs in the attic was part of the studio soundtrack last year and we’ve been willing in summer with cold spring harbour.

rachel at new designers

rachel welford postcard

friend rachel welford is exhibiting at the new designers exhibition this week in london. rachel works in glass and has been developing larger scale pieces as part of her MA. we produced some postcards for her to hand out this week [a close up of one of her pieces using sand-blasted glass and mirrors] and are working on a visual identity applied to stationery and website [still very much under development, but take a look if you'd like to see a little more of her work]

woodend – celebration, credit,
confession and controversy

woodend creative workspace, scarborough

woodend creative workspace officially opens today. i was in there for a meeting yesterday and the interior of the building had been transformed from cool white architectural space to a vibrant colourful hub with tenants’ work on all the walls. it looked good before, but now i wish we’d had all that work on show for the enterprising britain judging – it really makes a difference and proves that woodend is not about a showpiece building but rather about supporting a vibrant creative industries scene in the area.
