showcase

showcase postcard

series of postcards for exhibition and related events at yorkshire craft gallery. the work was all by bradford-based artists and curated by artworks creative communities – you can see an approach to using colour that we developed over time as part of the artworks ‘look’ and was later formalised as a key element in their new visual identity. other design work for the exhibition included large format posters, signage and the wall labels for the work on display which included the stories of the artists – which was really what the exhibition was about. all the images we used on the publicity material were from artists represented in the show.

the boys brigade programme packs

boys brigade programme packs

programme packs designed for the boys brigade anchor and junior sections – prior to our revamp of the brigade’s visual identity. these were the first use of the anchors and juniors logos logos we designed which aimed to give each age group of the organisation its own identity. the packs provide material for leaders to use in running their local group and content is themed in three zones. the programme ideas are collated according to theme for which we designed a suite of icons [below]. these follow through onto stickers that the boys are awarded and can be stuck on a wallchart tracking their progress towards a badge.

creative coast problem solving night

come armed with the problems, issues, things that nark you being a creative on the yorkshire coast. together we’ll look for solutions. we’re also looking for shared themes that might become campaigning issues for creative coast.

some extra’s tonight too: a presentation on a innovative sculpture-cum-installation for reminaging public space, tours round woodend, a quick refresher for bloggers and wine for all. 6pm at woodend creative workspace, the crescent, scarborough. yep, look at us – we’re the first ever event in the building.

more than this

more than this with brian mclaren

flyer for the 2008 run national conference. brian mclaren will be a big draw as he’s probably the USA ‘name’ most commonly associated with church in postmodern culture.

the flyer folds our from being little larger than a cd case to reveal a design than can be read in several ways. the flip side contains details of the keynote speakers and booking form. it’s one of those designs that seems to have attracted attention and has already brought a few out-of-the-blue inquiries.

next step is the national finals in which the judges will visit scarborough and see for themselves renaissance, the creative industries and woodend in action. that’s on 19th june. best start cleaning the studio…

the cultural explosion!

the cultural explosion! scarborough's future may 08

thud. that’s the sound of may’s renaissance news hitting doormats with the latest news from scarborough’s urban renaissance initiative.

kapow! that’s the sound of scarborough’s cultural explosion as documented in the centrespread by the arts and culture forum.

ping. that’s the light switching on in people’s heads as they realise what a culturally vibrant part of britain we live in.

enterprising britain – the scarborough contingent

tomorrow i’m in leeds at invitation of scarborough borough council to help present scarborough’s entry for the enterprising britain awards. we have been shortlisted as a yorkshire and humberside entry [1 of 4 shortlisted entries] and the regional winner will go through to represent yorks & humber in the national awards.

the scarborough contingent is david archer – the council’s strategic director of operations, andrew clay – director of woodend creative workspace, and myself. our presentation will be on renaissance and the role the creative industries is playing in the regeneration of the town. wish us luck.

coastival – yorkshire goes to the seaside

coastival - yorkshire goes to the seaside

at last we’re allowed to tell you… we’ve been keeping quiet about coastival – a new 3-day arts festival taking place in scarborough in 2009.

the festival which takes place in the otherwise sleepy month of february pulls together organisers from many of the yorkshire coast’s main festivals including beached, acoustic gathering, the jazz festival and it will be the new home of the festival of light. festival strands include dance, theatre, spoken word, visual arts, music, film, comedy and a full children’s and youth programme. events will take place across venues in scarborough. you can see it as a taster for the rest of the year’s festivals or as a new rich mix of the very best art and culture yorkshire has to offer.

we have been commissioned to develop a visual identity for the festival, a website and work on ideas for a promotional campaign over summer 2008. we also came up with the name ‘coastival’. the signs we’ve been teasing you with are the start of the publicity campaign [bringing yorkshire to the seaside], photos below are from yesterday’s launch and photocall with the yorkshire post [on page 8 of today's edition] and scarborough evening news [their story here]. photo above is of mezzzo-soprano victoria wright helping launch the festival.

coastival - yorkshire goes to the seaside

you can catch me talking about our plans to tour yorkshire with an opera singer on yorkshire coast radio today and you may have heard festival organiser wendy clews of create on radio york yesterday. more about the summer tour as the plans firm up…

in the meantime put the dates in your diary: coastival – 13-15 february 2009.
