the scarborough blogosphere

it’s been a while since john allsopp mentioned our new blog on his so he is overdue a reply. plus this gives us chance to document the rather tiny scarborough borough blogosphere. perhaps there’s lots of local creatives blogging away and we just haven’t come across them yet but our tally to date can be seen below.

my introduction to blogging was through the alt.worship/emerging church community, something i’ve been engaged with since the late 90′s – there’s a whole story as to how getting involved with the alt.worship thing influenced our philosophy in starting electric angel design but i’ll leave that for another time – most people probably come here just to see what work we’ve been doing anyway.

so, john’s blog. i admire john’s candidness which makes for an interesting read whether it’s about work (he’s a web developer) or what else he’s up to in life – there’s some nice photography on there. i’ve often bemoaned the lack of a friendly competitiveness here on the coast – i think it’s important to get a healthy atmosphere that encourages everyone to up their game. it might be that john is kick-starting that albeit it in a rather drastic way with his comments on the create site (entry for 30th april). heck.

other yorkshire coast creatives blogging:
toni sant – thoughts on malta, music and media from scarborough campus media lecturer
ross kendall – web & IT consultant. the creative migration to scarborough continues! hope you’re settling in ross.
ian truelove – i know ian from my days at leeds met university. although he’ll be embarrased at me saying it, ian is something of a genius. his new blog documents his creative adventures in second life.

are you working/studying/educating in the creative industries? do you blog? let us know!

lighten up

festival-of-light.jpg
the launch of create’s website reminded us of this poster design for the festival of light in 2005 – a create organised event. the poster folded down to a dinky little flyer, thus saving on the print costs of producing separate posters and flyers. two colours also kept the costs down and the reverse had more details of the events. we also produced a pure black and whitevariation that could be photocopied for last minute changes to the programme.

the festival of light was the idea of pete massey who was founder and at that point, director of create. pete’s since moved on to the arts council but let’s hope the festival continues. pete told me it was his creative response to the commercial onslaught of christmas – to bring some peace and light to the north yorkshire coast. there’s nothing more christmas-y than peace and light is there? nice one pete.

a spirited design

another of our websites is now online and looking good with the content added by steve at spirited exchanges. it’s driven by the etomite content management system – an open source system we’re using on several websites we’re currently developing, chosen for its ease of use and because it has the potential to be real good on accessibility.

many of our sites are designed to be handed over to the client to manage themselves at their request it so it’s always interesting to see how they develop. i like what spirited exchanges are saying and i’ll be checking the site regulalrly, not just to see how it’s going but to check up on stories and other resources.
